Maintenance Vessel: MC-XD

Maintenance Vessel: MC-XD

The MC-X was a heavy duty single bay maintenance and support vessel used for repairing large satellites and orbital stations. The D class was introduced to fill the need of the Loyalists for a deep space repair vehicle. Still limited to a single docking bay, the D class had additional cargo bays and fuel cells to propel it into deep space thus being able to reach the extremes of the Outer Rim.

Larger ships would need to dock with the MC-XD for repairs or synchronize orbit would be achieved. Although not ideal for some missions. the larger cargo areas with supplies and repair equipment was a sight to be held for stranded ships.

The crews of the D class adopted the slogan, "A little help is better than no help when stranded in deep space." However some of the less reputable captains preferred, "Ass, Grass, or cash. No one rides for free." To this date it is undetermined why these captains needed a lawn in space. Maybe their dogs needed a place to pee.

This was part of a self challenge. Without any preconception, I gathered pieces from bins at the Lego Store in Disney. The idea was to build a ship/droid/whatever only from parts I could grab from the bins at the store. Also all the pieces had to fit in one container. I grabbed as many funky bits as they had available and made due with what I brought home.

1975-7 Vintage Rototiller, Sears Rotospader

1975-7 Vintage Rototiller, Sears Rotospader

I gave up on the old rototiller I got el freebo and bought one that demonstrated its willingness to stay running. I have to coax it a bit and had to overhaul the carburetor with a new diaphragm. Sears no longer supports this RotoSpader (model 785.295050) but the Briggs and Stratton people have unparalleled support. Hint; if you use a lawn mower engine be sure the flywheel is cast-iron as it can't use a blade as a flywheel. The shaft turns a worm gear and rotates another gear to chew the garden up. The outer tines can be removed to produce a Mantis on steroids.

Those with parts diagrams for the tiller itself are more than welcome to contact me.

The Teacher's Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom (Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Series)

Cooperative learning is widely endorsed as a pedagogical practice that promotes student learning. Recently, the research focus has moved to the role of teachers’ discourse during cooperative learning and its effects on the quality of group discussions and the learning achieved. However, although the benefits of cooperative learning are well documented, implementing this pedagogical practice in classrooms is a challenge that many teachers have difficulties accomplishing.
Difficulties may occur because teachers often do not have a clear understanding of the basic tenets of cooperative learning and the research and theoretical perspectives that have informed this practice and how they translate into practical applications that can be used in their classrooms. In effect, what do teachers need to do to affect the benefits widely documented in research?
A reluctance to embrace cooperative learning may also be due to the challenge it poses to teachers’ control of the learning process, the demands it places on classroom organisational changes, and the personal commitments teachers need to make to sustain their efforts. Moreover, a lack of understanding of the key role teachers need to play in embedding cooperative learning into the curricula to foster open communication and engagement among teachers and students, promote cooperative investigation and problem-solving, and provide students with emotionally and intellectually stimulating learning environments may be another contributing factor.
The Teacher's Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom provides readers with a comprehensive overview of these issues with clear guidelines on how teachers can embed cooperative learning into their classroom curricula to obtain the benefits widely attributed to this pedagogical practice. It does so by using language that is appropriate for both novice and experienced educators. The volume provides: an overview of the major research and theoretical perspectives that underpin the development of cooperative learning pedagogy; outlines how specific small group experiences can promote thinking and learning; discusses the key role teachers play in promoting student discourse; and, demonstrates how interaction style among students and teachers is crucial in facilitating discussion and learning. The collection of chapters includes many practical illustrations, drawn from the contributors’ own research of how teachers can use cooperative learning pedagogy to facilitate thinking and learning among students across different educational settings.

US Naval Hospital Ship Mercy: Conference

The entire medical record keeping system on the ship Mercy is electronic, and is connected in real time via satellite link to records at the Veterans Administration system. I didn't see any filing cabinets anywhere! Paperless!

Patient images and history can be shared, and diagnostic opinions can be discussed around the world, in real time.

It makes me wonder why some people and politicians are opposed to the proposed US health care reforms, when their arguments state that the US Government is incompetent and they don't want the government to be involved in our health care. From what I saw, and have heard about the hospitals in the SF Bay Area (my wife is in the health care industry), this system is far advanced over what private industry has developed for the "common man". I think the government SHOULD be involved with our health care. We have lessons to learn and ideas to implement; just waiting for the will.

Medical Error and Patient Safety: Human Factors in Medicine

A difficult and recalcitrant phenomenon, medical error causes pervasive and expensive problems in terms of patient injury, ineffective treatment, and rising healthcare costs. Simple heightened awareness can help, but it requires organized, effective remedies and countermeasures that are reasonable, acceptable, and adaptable to see a truly significant drop in the intolerable rate of medical mistakes. Only with better understanding, knowledge, and directed techniques can there be rapid and marked improvement in medical error management discipline.
Since medical error is situation specific and involves diverse variables in equipment, environment, and human performance, the correct choice of preventive and corrective techniques is critical. Providing a wealth of useful ideas, concepts, and techniques, Medical Error and Patient Safety: Human Factors in Medicine uses abroad perspective to present more than 500 remedies that can be applied and tailored to your unique circumstances. This detailed review of so many measures enables you to correctly identify needs and undertake appropriate actions to achieve a success that can be measured in avoided injuries, improved healthcare, and reduced cost.

Thought provoking and useful, this book considers the potential for error and the possibility for improvement in every aspect of healthcare. After an introduction to general concepts and approaches, it examines vulnerabilities in medical services, including emergency services, healthcare facilities, and infection control. It covers risks in medical devices and product design; human factors such as fatigue and stress; management errors; errors in communication at all levels of the healthcare hierarchy; as well as mistakes in drug delivery including faulty labels and warnings. The authors also compare and contrast several analytical methods, their interpretation, and their translation into a plan of action.
